What is the purpose of the heat?
The heat is important for many reasons. First, it softens the tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the body, increasing flexibility and enabling the practitioner to go more deeply and effectively into the postures while greatly reducing the risk of injury. It increases heart rate for a better cardiovascular workout, while at the same time reducing heart irregularities associated with sudden exercise. The heat also thins the blood and causes capillaries to open, allowing blood to flow more easily and deeply into body tissues and organs. The sweat resulting from the heat detoxifies the body. The result is a healing effect in any injured areas and a cleansing of the circulatory system. Also, the heated room requires increased focus, concentration, and determination, which ultimately promotes a stronger mind/body connection.
Are there beginner classes?
No, Some Like it Hot classes are appropriate for all levels, from beginners to advanced students. As a beginner, you simply do each posture to your comfort level. As your knowledge and understanding of the postures increase, you will learn to decipher what your body needs in each. Try your best. Your postures do not have to be ‘perfect’ in order to do yoga. It’s called yoga practice for a reason. All we can ask ourselves is to try the right way with our best effort. The benefits will follow.
How will I feel during my first class?
It is very common to experience feelings of nausea and dizziness at the start of your practice. It is important to remember that this is something new that you are asking of your body and that it takes a little time to adjust. Feeling sick is simply your body’s way of asking you to take a break. If/when it occurs, you just need to sit down for a few minutes and let your heart rate slow and your breathing return to normal. Any queasiness usually passes within a few minutes and when you are ready you are welcome to rejoin the class. Remember, your only goal at first is to stay in the room; everything else is optional!
How much water should I drink before coming to class?
Due to the extreme sweating experienced during a hot yoga class, proper hydration is incredibly important and requires some forethought. It is highly recommended that you drink at least 1 to 1.5 liters of water throughout the day of each class. It’s important to keep in mind that it takes at least 45 minutes for your body to process water, so chugging a few glasses right before or during class is not going to help you. If you find yourself feeling extremely thirsty during class, that’s usually a good sign that you’re not hydrating enough beforehand. Also important to keep in mind, proper hydration is not just about water consumption.
What are electrolytes and why are they important?
Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium that are crucial to the body for proper muscles function as well as proper absorption of water. If your electrolyte levels are off, your body will not be able to absorb water effectively no matter how much you drink. Symptoms of electrolyte deficiency include dizziness, headaches, cramping, and fatigue. Sources of electrolytes include coconut water, artichoke water, pickle juice, tomatoes and tomato juice, bananas, figs, oranges, and lemons.
Is it OK to practice if I have current or past injuries?
Yes, healing requires increased circulation to the injured area and both the heat and the postures promote that circulation. It is very important to remember though that you are working with an injury; patience is essential! The healing benefits of each posture comes from proper form, not from depth, so pay close attention to the alignment of your body and listen carefully to the instructions. We recommend that you check with your doctor before beginning/continuing your practice.
Will hot yoga have an effect on my emotions?
Yes, hot yoga can help to balance emotions in a couple of different ways. First off, a regular practice improves the functioning of the endocrine system, which in turn stabilizes hormone production within the body, greatly impacting your sense of emotional well-being. A consistent hot yoga practice also works to strengthen the mind, promoting the abilities of self-control, concentration, determination, and patience. As practitioners become more aware of their inner lives through the practice of yoga, they begin to notice how the events and interactions of daily life affect their emotional state. With such awareness, people learn to exercise choice in their response, which leads to greater emotional stability.
Where is Some Like it Hot Yoga & Boutique studio located?
We are located at 408 Ignacio Blvd. in Southern Novato, in the Pacheco Plaza Shopping Center. Our studio is fully equipped with men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers. Please feel free to take advantage of our amenities while you are at the studio!
How old do I need to be to take class?
We welcome all students over the age of 15 at Some Like it Hot Yoga, however, if you are under the age of 18 you must have a parent or legal guardian sign a consent form for you. Remember, it’s fun to take yoga as a family, and we do offer family plan pricing!

First time visit at Some Like it Hot Yoga?
Arrive 15-20 minutes EARLY! You will need to fill out a quick registration form and discuss any injuries/health issues with your instructor prior to class. Our staff will explain what to expect your first class, where to lay your mat down, etc.
What should I bring with me to class?
Please bring your yoga mat, a towel, water and an open mind and a positive attitude! If you do not yet have a yoga mat or a towel we rent them at the studio for $2 & $3 each. Hand towels are provided free of charge. We even have cold towels free of charge in our water cooler.
What should I wear?
Lightweight, breathable, and comfortable clothing is recommended. Men are generally most comfortable in shorts, swim trunks and T-Shirts or tank tops. Women usually wear sports bras, tank tops, yoga pants or shorts. When deciding on how to dress remember you will be sweating, so dress accordingly … but be comfortable! You may want to bring a change of clothes for afterwards.
I am both older and not very flexible. Is yoga for me?
ABSOLUTELY! Yoga is for people of all ages and for people with all ranges of flexibility. There can be unlimited benefits to people of all ages and flexibility who correctly practice yoga.
How often should I practice my yoga?
Yoga is a lifelong practice that requires commitment and dedication. For new students, a regular and consistent practice is recommended for the first few weeks in order to allow your body and mind to acclimate to the heat, the series, and the changes resulting in your body. Commitment to your practice up front will help your body acquire the physical memory and stamina necessary for enhancing your practice every time you are in the room. After you have established a solid foundation for your practice, we recommend practicing 4-5 times per week to obtain the maximum benefits. You will receive the same benefits with a reduced practice schedule – just in a longer period of time.
Can I book a private yoga class?
Absolutely! We offer private yoga sessions for 1-49 people. Our instructors will guide you through a typical Hot Yoga class in a mildly heated room & will explain each yoga pose & correct postures & breathing techniques.
